Today’s session is gotten from the first reading (1st Kings 19:9-13). Theme: Trusting the still small voice.
Reflection shall begin from the historical background of the ancient Israel during the time of Elijah. Prophet Elijah lived in the period of history characterized by profound political abd social changes in the 9th Century BC.
At that period, King Omrel of Israel an intelligent general took over Israerl and turned it to a powerful nation. Unfortunately, the marriage of which he arranged between his son and queen Jezebel brought a disastrous consequences to the people of Isrea and all this happen during the time of Pophet Elijah. In his quest for solution, Elijah seeked the face of God. He didn’t find it in the wind or in the fire, but he found in the Still small voice.
Bringing this to our contemporary society, where insanity has become the order of the day, it is important we look critically into it as it will help us unlearn the norms of our time. This implies that anyone who seeks to hear the still small voice must learn this culture.
But then, how did we get to the stage of spiritual quest? The spiritual chaos that we found ourselvestoday is championed by quest for material things, greed, selfishness and others which has beclouded our sense of reasoning and also because we do not listen to our deep thoughts. During an experience shared by the moderator, a person came greeting the priest from the spiritual gathering. Does that means there was a fellowship from the floow within the Brethren? This questions was raised because to fellowship spirituality with your brethre, in any spiritual gathering, it requires absolute concentration. But in this case it wasn’t obtained. It is appalling that the teachings from the book of Sirach and the letter of St James on silence is no longer obtained in this present time.
An experience again was shared by same moderator about a brother kunowing fully well that the holymass requires absolute tranquility was found during the offertory collection was seen operating the social media. Does that implies that such lifestyle was influenced from home? And how can this be averted?
In the first reading today, Prophet Elijah linked the teaching of Christ with locking oneself in the room to pray than to pray at the street corners. But then, which prayer is more preferable? And which does God answers faster? The prayer done in private or the one done in the crowd?
Elijah’s experience proved to us that God prefers the silence mode of pryer.Even Jesus Christ, emphasized more on the secrecy and sacredness of prayer. And this can only be obtained in a noiseless environment, a place where we concentrate best.
In this present days, it looks as if our reasoning (knowledge) has taken the place of faith. But accordin to todays reflection, where and how can faith and knowledge be applied? Faith and knowledge are like 2 sides of coin towards success, meaning that one cant urvive without the other. In the case of Peter’s encounter with Jesus, he exercised faith int hat mysterious scene because even when his knowledge of swimming couldn’t help him, his faith in the lord did.. it can also be said that knowledge depends on faith.
Even when we lose hope in God,Our faith in God remains and in that faith, exist knowledge. In as much as we have learnt about faith and knowledge in life’s process, we should also know that a still small voice can be heard at anytime, even in any situations life offers us. We should also come to understand that this small voice is best heard in SILENCE.
Therefore, silence speaks because the language of God is silence meaning that God speaks to us more when we seek him in silence.
THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS YOU.
