Introduction: A country is a political state, nation, or territory which is being controlled. It is often referred to as the land of an individual’s birth, residence, or citizenship. So by virtue of this definition, I would likely say that Nigeria is our country. Then according to our topic, country in this context simply means the Leaders or the Government as a whole Government is the system or group of people governing an organized community, generally a state. The government can also be defined as the group of people with the authority to govern a country or state; a particular ministry in office. We have 3 Tiers of Government in Nigeria:The federal government of Nigeria is composed of three distinct branches: legislative, executive, and judicial, whose powers are vested by the Constitution of Nigeria in the National Assembly, the President, and the federal courts, including the Supreme Court, respectively.(1)The Legislative ArmThe legislative branch is made up of the House of Representatives and Senate, known collectively as the Congress. Among other powers, the legislative branch makes all laws, declares war, regulates interstate and foreign commerce and controls taxing and spending policies.(2) The Executive ArmThe executive branch carries out and enforces laws. It includes the president, vice president, the Cabinet, executive departments, independent agencies, and other boards, commissions, and committees.(3) The JudiciaryOne of the major functions of the judiciary is to interpret and apply laws to specific cases. In the course of deciding the disputes that come before it, the judges interpret and apply laws. This function is performed by the judges.Additionally the Judiciary has the power to issue out orders or directives as may be necessary to ensure law, peace and order is maintained. There are several systems of Government but Nigeria as a country is practicing the Presidential system of Government in which it embraces Democracy. Then what is Democracy?Democracy is a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections. Commonly said, democracy is the government of the people by the people and for the people.****With the above information, do we think these tiers of Government are still proactive with their functions in Nigeria?****Do we think Nigeria still practices Democracy?A country where by the people/citizens do not have the right to choose their leaders nor even let their voice heard to me is not practicing Democracy..We have really dwelt much on the country, let’s talk about the *We* as used in the phrase…We will be looking firstly on rights as citizens, so that we can literally know how we can care more about our country…What are Human Rights?Human rights are moral principles or norms that describe certain standards of human behaviour and are regularly protected in municipal and international law.Human rights are the basic rights and freedoms that belong to every person in the world, from birth until death. These rights are acquired naturally by virtue of being a Human Being. That is why they are called Fundamental Human Rights.I believe that if we know these rights we will able to know our Stand in this country…..Examples of these Human Rights include:1. The right to life. No one has the right to take your life 2. The right to liberty and freedom.3. The right to the pursuit of happiness. Happiness is a free gift.4. The right to live your life free of discrimination.5. The right to control what happens to your own body and to make medical decisions for yourself.6. The right to freely exercise your religion and practice your religious beliefs without fear of being prosecuted for your beliefs.7. The right to be free from prejudice on the basis of race, gender, national origin, color, age or sex.8. The right to grow old.9. The right to a fair trial and due process of the law.10. The right to be free from cruel and unusual punishment if not guilty.11. The right to be free from torture.12. The right to be free from slavery. Nobody has the right to enslave you.13. The right to freedom of speech. 14. The right to freely associate with whomever you like and to join legal groups of which you’d like to be a part.15. The right to freedom of thought.16. The right not to be prosecuted from your thoughts. There are so many other rights but I will leave us with this few…..Do we really know our responsibilities as a citizen? I believe we all know that our Responsibility is different from our Rights…. Or are they the same?Responsibility is something you have to do or (at least) ought to do while right is something you are allowed to do or permitted to do. You have no obligation to exercise your right but you are obligated to perform your responsibilities. This brings us to our Responsibilities as Citizens of Nigeria, as we are expected to care more since our Government has failed….These responsibilities include the following but are not limited to:(1)Supporting and defending the Constitution at all times.(2)Stay informed of the issues affecting your community. Let us always try and be informed about the happenings in our community especially our surrounding. For instance: Since the incidence of Yellow fever, it is your responsibility to go get your vaccination . You must not Wait for the government to bring it to your door step.(3)Participate in the democratic process: During election period, you find out that most of us do develop this *I don’t care attitude* which is not good at all. We ought to get our voter’s card before election in order to enable us participate actively during the voting processes and avoid being used as an instrument for scattering election procedures.(4)Respect and obey federal, state, and local laws. Obedience to the law is very very essential.(5) Respect the rights, beliefs, and opinions of others. We are entitled to our own opinion and as such we should not attack or go against other people’s belief.(6) Participate in your local community: This simply implies that whenever community work like clearing of grass, picking of wastes, filling of holes, repair of roads etc is being fixed, we should try and participate actively. This will help to build communual leaving.(7)Pay income and other taxes honestly, and on time, to federal, state, and local authorities.(8)Serve on a jury when called upon: If you are to serve as a witness, try and stand by the truth and maintain the truth.(9)Defend the country if the need should arise: This means being patriotic. Don’t form the habit of talking bad about your country. It influences you negatively Therefore with the knowledge of the above rights and responsibilities as a citizen, we should not wait for the country to do everything for us but always endeavor to do the much we can. This will indeed take our country to a greater height because we are the majority.GENERAL QUESTIONS1. What if, after all the efforts to care for the country, things seem not to get any better?***Your efforts can definitely not be in vain. To be frank with you people are really making it big in this country while some people are using the excuse of the bad government to become lazy. So the ball is definitely in our court. You have to be very smart in order to out smart Nigeria..2. And again you know in this country if you are a child of nobody, your efforts seems to all be in vain…How do you achieve all that whereby you are not even the space or chance to do so or even all your efforts are highly neglected? How do you care for people who don’t even give you the benefit of doubt to do so?*** You don’t intend to care for the government instead you care for your fellow citizens by carrying out your Responsibilities. Most atimes the chances and opportunities we have to make it big lies within our immediate cycle. This implies that if you have a goal , endeavor to mingle with those that can help you achieve such goal. And always remember that with God all things are possible.God bless you!!!!!jhuj
